Equity On and Off Campus
MUNSU is committed to fighting for and alongside Aboriginal learners.Sisters in Spirit is a campaign developed by the Native Women’s Association of Canada. The campaign raises awareness about pervasive violence against Aboriginal women in Canada. Over 500 women have gone missing or have been murdered in Canada in the past 30 years. Events honouring the missing and murdered women, and calling on all levels of government to take action, are normally held in October.MUNSU first participated in this campaign in October 2009. The event consisted of a native drum group, a guest speaker, and a film screening of Stolen Sisters. Since 2009 MUNSU has continued to work closely with community and coalition partners year-round to combat violence against Aboriginal women and raise awareness of issues currently being faced by Aboriginal women in Canada. This past year marked our largest Sisters in Spirit vigil yet, with representatives from across Memorial and the community, and members of all three major provincial political parties participating in the event.
