Sisters in Spirit is a campaign developed by the Native Women's Association of Canada. MUNSU first participated in this campaign in October 2009. The event consisted of a native drum group, a guest speaker and a film screening of "Stolen Sisters".
The campaign raises awareness about pervasive violence against Aboriginal women in Canada. Over 500 women have gone missing or been murdered in Canada in the past 30 years. The events are normally held in October.
In addition to the event that was held by MUNSU in St. John's, there were other events hosted with our coalition partners in Corner Brook by the Grenfell College Student Union and in Happy Valley Goose Bay by the Canadian Federation of Students.
This campaign honours the missing and murdered women and calls on all levels of government to take action.
